  1. Something in the Night was a brilliant film noir – very entertaining, full of everything they should have including the repartee, the references, the quotes, and the convoluted plot twists.
My only quibble is that John Hodiak didn’t really have the star quality to grab the audience and have us rooting for him. He was competent but lacked something to draw us in in the way that a Grant or a Bogart would have done. Nancy Guild, though, was excellent.
    Thanks for another gem Norman.

  2. I agree with your comment about John Hodiak’s performance and have been bemused by some reviewers who have praised him. This, for example, on IMDB: “John Hodiak probably never had enough opportunities to play lead in good films. We are fortunate to have here his extremely convincing amnesiac veteran.” Or this: “The role is played with subtlety … by John Hodiak,” To be fair, he had a difficult task in playing an amnesiac hiding his condition from the world and who therefore can’t show his confusion. Nevertheless he has to telegraph that confusion to the spectator (mainly through a voice-over), so he ends up offering only a blank face and this just looks wooden.
